Adler Comes Home
Our first week with Adler home has been amazing. He was discharged from the NICU on February 1 and is doing great!
He has been a little angel since coming home, he wakes up to eat about every 3-4 hours and sleeps the rest of the time.
He had his first doctors visit this week, he was almost 19 inches and 5 pounds 11 ounces.
Adler has forever changed our lives; we are both so in love with him and can't hold him enough. We can already
see that he is a little rascal during his feedings; he likes to resist the bottle by keeping his tongue pushed up to the roof
of his mouth, and he tires pretty quickly. We just want to eat his little toes and fingers!
Adler John Brun's Arrival (updated 1-22-08)
The past couple weeks have been quite a roller coaster for both Joe and I, but it was all worth it! Adler John
Brun was born on 1-18-08 at 7:57PM. He was 18.25 inches and 5 pounds 1 ounce.
How it happened: At around 6:30PM my water broke and immediately Adler wanted out. The nurses quickly called
the doctor and transferred me to Labor and Delivery. My doctor on call was not sure if he would make it in time so the
hospital called a Dr. 'Any'...meaning any doctor in the hospital would come to deliver. I began pushing as soon as I
got in the room and Joe was on his way stuck in some traffic. They gave me a shot to slow my contractions trying to
buy some time for Joe and my doctors to make it, but my son was determined and I had to continue to push. During
pushing Adler's heart rate dropped and Dr. Any insisted we needed to get to the operating room and have an emergency C-section.
Thankfully, Joe had gotten there by this time, but my doctor was still in traffic!. As you can imagine, Joe and I were
pretty scared at this point. We made it to the operaterating room and the nurse noticed that Adler's heart rate began
to rise and she insisted that we wait to see if his heart rate would stay up and try to begin pushing again. Dr. Any
thought we should go ahead with the C-section, but thankfully my doctor made in just in time to agree with the nurse to allow
me to push again. This all happened so fast there was no time for medication, so Adler was born naturally at 7:57PM.
He is the most beautiful baby boy I have ever laid eyes on!
Adler was taken up to the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) where they examined and tested him. Initially,
the doctor expected Adler to be in the NICU for 2-4 weeks, but now he is hopeful he will be able to go home
after 2 weeks. The great news is that Adler's lungs seem to be fully developed and he is able to breath regular
room air. He is having difficulty with digesting his feeds, a feeding tube was put in his nose on 1-19-08 and they
are trying to increase the amount of food he can tolerate. His current weight is 4 pounds and 13.5 ounces;
he is in an incubator to help keep his temperature up and light on him for his jaundice. He has
a lot going on, but I know he is a fighter and will work hard to get home as soon as possible. Both of his parents are miserable each
time we have to leave him--we miss him as soon as we leave the hospital! We know that he is in great hands and we can't
wait to bring him home.
Baby Brun is still hanging in there (updated 1-16-08)
The great news is that Baby Brun is still in-utero and has beaten all the odds. I am still 4-5 cm dilated and 100%
effaced, and our baby is in poised for delivery. Today Baby reached 33 weeks and 2 days. I am still in the
hospital and on medication to stop labor, once I make it to 34 weeks they will take me off strict bedrest and allow me to
get into a wheelchair/sitting up position (I think). The doctors still say to take it one day at a time and are
not sure of our plan of care.
As for Joe and I, we are very optimistic at this point and pleased with our care. We may be going a little stir-crazy
and are quite impatient, but we want what is best for our little one and we can't wait to meet him/her.
Thank you again for all of your thoughts and prayers.
Change of Plans (updated 1-8-08)
As many of you have heard, I was admitted to the hospital on 1-4-08 due to preterm labor. I went to the doctors
office for a routine visit where they discovered my body was going into labor. Within 2 hours I was dilated 4-5 cm and
completely effaced (cervix thinned out) and I was having contractions every 2-4 minutes. Thanks to quick action
by the hospital they were able to put me on medication to stop labor and inject steroid shots to help the baby's lungs develop
faster. The first 48 hours were extremely emotional times for us, but thank goodness we made it through without delivering.
The baby is now 32 weeks gestation (8 weeks early) and the doctors feel the baby is a good size.
We have been fortunate to have great family and friends that have been here to take care of us and have been sending
their thoughts and love....so thanks to all of you because it has really helped us get through this extremely difficult time.
At the bottom of this page I have attached a link for those of you interested in predicting the sex, length, weight,
and due date.
We will keep you updated as we know more, our Doctor is amazed we made it this far and continues to believe we will deliver
any hour.

We would like to welcome our first baby into the world. Although
still a peanut in size, this child has already changed our lives in so many ways and we would love to share our jourey with
you.

How we found out
We took a home pregnancy test together....it was positive, but not a definitive
positive. It was the lightest positive sign possible, I thought maybe I created the positive in my head so I handed
it over to Joe to see what he thought. He looked at me and said "I can't believe it until there is a real positive"....unfortunately
that was our last test. We eventually went through several tests, all with the same result. I think Joe was playing
the 'denial' role, but I think he was secretly ecstatic. The next day I bought 3 more tests which all showed positive!
We were both so excited, so I called the doctor and made our first appointment.

What's New? We have had 3 appointments so far, the first 2 we had an ultrasound done.
The first appointment was just before our 6 week mark; the heart was still forming so we could see a tiny flutter...not quite
a heart beat yet. The second appointment was at 9 weeks and we were able to see the baby's head, butt, and legs. The
baby was moving during the second ultrasound (we are going to have an active one, as I have always been told what goes around
comes around....I will take it!) and the heart beat was strong.
Today we have our third appointment 12 weeks and 4 days into pregnancy, we will officially be in our second trimester
later this week. At this appointment we heard the baby's heart beating at 160 beats per minute, and the Doctor heard
some other noises he said was the baby moving around. This was a very exciting appointment and I feel relieved
to be out of the first trimester. We will post the ultrasound pictures and belly photos soon.
I have gained 1-2 pounds so far and am feeling great! I was cleared to begin running again and do my normal
activity.
Visit # 4--17 weeks. This visit we heard the Baby's heartbeat much stronger, the heart rate was around
150 bpm. I have gained 3-5 pounds so far, next visit we have our ultrasound where we can find out the baby's sex.....but
we have decided to wait!
Visit #5--21 weeks. This has been the most exciting visit (although they are all wonderful) we had our
ultrasound where they check all of the baby's measurements and organs. Great news...our baby looks great, all measurements
on target. We have posted the ultrasound pictures, in the beginning the baby was facing out so you can see the
baby's face (I must say, what a cute face it is), then by the end of the ultrasound the baby rolled and you can see the
baby's sideview including the spine.
This visit I have gained a total of 9-10 pounds. The baby has been kicking away and Joe has finally felt
the movements!
DAD'S CORNER
January 22, 2008
Our little man is finally here! What a whirlwind it has been, and Amy was such a champion going through
this whole ordeal. As I look at our little Boy, I see my wife's strength and feistiness in him, so I know he will 'graduate'
the NICU very quickly! With so much happening over the past 2 weeks it's been hard for me to hold a single thought in
my head but I am so glad Adler and Amy made it through fairly comfortably. With a lot to take care of at the house,
we await the day we can bring home our Boy and start our new Life together with him.
November 2007
It's hard to relate to how Amy is feeling with this being developing inside her little tummy. I have
had a spectrum of feelings through the past several months, from denial, to fear, to outright pride. I am so excited
for the months to come, but I am fearful of the planning, all the things to accomplish before Baby Brun arrives, the question
of whether I will be a good father. To point, I don't know much about parenthood, but I know it will come quickly, and
will come naturally. Our visits to the OB/GYN's have gone quite smoothly, and we have gained great confidence
that our Baby will be healthy. I can just tell that we are going to have an active one on our hands--Baby B just kicks
and kicks and squirms around at all hours of the day, but especially the night. I guess it's the restlessness that only
a Brun can possess!
So, as we approach our 24th week with our Baby, we are trying to narrown down our name list, comparing our
best boy and girl names. In addition, we need to take a serious look at our planning of the nursery room upstairs and
the eventual furniture we will setup for when our little Brun arrives. With the upcoming Holidays, the time is sure
to go fast and March will race around the corner before we know it, with the gift of our first!
December 2, 2007
We have made into trimester 3, which is pretty scary. The time has just flown by and our dream of having a baby is
getting closer and closer. My last appointment was at 25 weeks. I measured about a half a week larger than my
due date (which really does not mean too much, unless it is weeks off). I have gained 13-15 pounds as of 25 weeks and
my belly continues to grow....and maybe a few other areas also. I am feeling great so far with a few minor pregnancy
related strange things like calf cramps, heartburn/reflux, and I need a few extra hours of sleep these days. Baby
Brun has been kicking like crazy through all hours of the day and I love every second of it! After our next appointment
we will have to be seen every 2 weeks, so we will keep you updated.
Janurary 1, 2008
32 weeks (8 months) Happy New Years!!! The time has flown by and before
we know it Baby Brun will be here. As the day approaches I feel more and more pregnant by the second. Besides the fact
that in the past 4-6 months I feel like I have tripled in size, the back pain has begun to set in. Overall I feel I
have been very lucky to make it this far without much discomfort....I'll keep you updated on that statement.
Baby Brun continues to be very active, always kicking, rolling or elbowing me on my right side. I just can't
convince the Baby to explore my left side. We now have appointments every 2 weeks and soon will have them every week.
We are both so excited and anxious for the baby's birth. We just cant wait to meet our first child!
Many of you have tried to guess the sex, size, and due date. I linked a website we set up so we can see who is the closest
to the sex, length, date, and time. Please click here to play! Please use game name "Baby-B"
